Technological Interventions in the Emergency Departments to Enhance Safety and Care Experiences of Mental and Behavioral Patients and Staff
DescriptionMental and Behavioral Health (MBH) related Emergency Department (ED) visits have increased in the United States since the COVID-19 epidemic, specifically for young adults. To manage the high influx of patients, EDs have adopted technological interventions to support care delivery. This article presents a review of technological interventions employed in the ED to improve the safety and care experiences of patients with MBH conditions. An initial search on six databases led to a final selection of 29 peer-reviewed articles. The key findings indicate that screening technologies show high potential in identifying underlying issues with patients arriving with non-psychiatric illness, use of remote psychiatry consultation improves access to care, crisis intervention programs show high feasibility and acceptability to support patients waiting in the ED and documentation techniques improve communication with outpatient providers. Further research needs to be conducted to enhance the ability to see and hear patients during remote consultation and enhance the acceptability of computerized screening among patients.
