Examining Outcomes Related to Drivers’ Understanding of Adaptive Cruise Control: A Simulator Study
DescriptionAs Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) become increasingly common, understanding how drivers interact with these systems is essential for maximizing the safety benefits. A multi-site driving simulator study was conducted to examine the relationship between ACC knowledge and performance, behavioral, and subjective measures. Sixty-five participants completed three drives to probe their knowledge and understanding of ACC. Random forest models were used to identify outcome measures associated with mental model scores. Results showed that eye-glance behaviors such as glance frequency, dispersal, and attention ratios towards AoIs were strong predictors of ACC knowledge. Subjective factors, such as trust, perceived workload, and technology acceptance, as well as demographics like age and driving experience, were also relevant. Models tailored to specific driving contexts outperformed generalized models, suggesting the value of context-specific assessments. These findings highlight the importance of using targeted, multimodal measures to assess ADAS understanding and to inform future training and evaluation strategies.
