Analyzing Usability Challenges and Guidance for Telemonitoring and Remote Patient Monitoring Systems: Initial Insights from a Systematic Literature Review

DescriptionTelemonitoring and Remote Patient Monitoring (TRPM) systems are transforming how healthcare is delivered by enabling continuous patient monitoring beyond clinical settings. However, usability issues such as complex interfaces, unreliable data feedback, and poor workflow integration, continue to limit their effectiveness and adoption. This study presents key findings from a systematic literature review of 46 empirical studies on TRPM usability. The review identified four main challenge areas: cognitive usability barriers, operational inefficiencies, system reliability concerns, and engagement issues. These problems affect patients' and clinicians' ability to effectively interact with TRPM technologies, especially over time. Our analysis highlights the need for more user-centered system design, adaptive interfaces, and robust usability testing throughout development. The findings offer guidance for researchers, designers, and healthcare practitioners working to improve TRPM systems and advance remote healthcare delivery. By addressing these issues, we can help to ensure these tools are more accessible, trustworthy, and impactful for diverse patient populations.
