Long COVID and Workplace Safety: Evaluating Post-Infection Outcomes and Occupational Injury Prevalence Among U.S. Full-Time Employees
DescriptionThis study explored the relationship between Long COVID symptoms and workplace injury prevalence among U.S. full-time employees. A survey of 1,500 working adults gathered information on their history of COVID-19 infection, self-reported Long COVID symptoms, and workplace injury rates. Respondents were categorized into three groups: COVID-negative, COVID-positive without Long COVID symptoms, and COVID-positive with symptoms lasting three months or longer. Chi-square analyses revealed a significant correlation between Long COVID symptoms and workplace injuries (p = .005), with individuals reporting Long COVID symptoms experiencing significantly higher injury rates (20.7%) compared to both the COVID-negative group (12.4%) and the COVID-positive without Long COVID symptoms group (13.5%). The survey results indicate a significant association between Long COVID symptoms and workplace injuries, underscoring potential occupational risks for affected individuals. The higher incidence of workplace injuries among those with self-reported Long COVID symptoms highlights the need to consider preventive measures and workplace safety protocols. It is important to note that these findings do not establish a causal link between Long COVID and workplace injuries. While Long COVID symptoms may increase susceptibility to injury, pre-existing conditions that raise injury risk are also linked to a higher likelihood of developing Long COVID after infection.
