Exploring the Relationship Between Self-Efficacy, Driving Experience, and Trust in Older Adults’ Willingness to Adopt Fully Autonomous Vehicles

DescriptionIn general, older adults tend to be less trusting and more hesitant to adopt various kinds of technologies, especially in relation to their younger counterparts. However, technology is becoming increasingly necessary in daily life. One emerging technology that may provide a significant benefit to the population is self-driving cars, or autonomous vehicles (AVs). AVs are expected to decrease the number of on-road accidents, increase the productivity of commuters, and increase the mobility of populations that may otherwise have limited transportation options, such as older adults. Based on previous literature, we hypothesized that previous driving experience, self-efficacy, trust, and technology acceptance would be significant predictors of an individual's intent to use AVs and that this relationship would be stronger for older adults than younger ones. This study included 255 adults, split into younger adult and older adult age groups. A linear regression model was tested on both age groups. As hypothesized, the model was significant for both samples; furthermore, model fit was higher for the older group. This study provides further support for the growing body of literature that supports the importance of self-efficacy, trust, and driving experience when considering older adults’ willingness to adopt AVs.
