The Evolution of Deception: Understanding Human Susceptibility to AI-generated Images
DescriptionThe modern digital world presents users with the difficult task of deciphering real from deceptive content. Scammers are now able to utilize artificial intelligence to make their attacks more realistic, making detection even more challenging. The present study explored if participants differ in their ability to classify past deception methods (i.e., phishing emails & text messages), compared to AI-generated content (i.e., images of faces). The results suggest that users may be particularly vulnerable to AI-driven scams, demonstrating the worst performance for the image task. However, risk literacy and cognitive reflection may help insulate some users from AI-driven scams. Future research should continue to examine AI-generated content in a variety of scam methods, and determine how to protect users from such attacks.
