The Effects of Using VR Technologies as Intervention Methods for Children with ASD- A Literature Review

DescriptionChildren with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often face challenges with daily living due to difficulties in interoception—the ability to sense internal body states. Developing self-regulation skills can improve their quality of life and open new opportunities. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promising, innovative intervention by providing immersive and controlled environments that support skill-building. This presentation examines how VR can specifically enhance self-regulatory and interoceptive abilities in children with ASD. A review of 19 peer-reviewed studies highlights VR’s potential to improve social, communicative, and cognitive outcomes. Findings suggest that the positive impact of VR is closely tied to the thoughtful application of human factors principles in its design. This includes user-centered interfaces, sensory considerations, and adaptive feedback mechanisms. By analyzing both the technological and psychological dimensions, this review underscores the importance of integrating human factors in future VR-based interventions. Attendees will gain insights into how VR can be adapted to meet the needs of neurodivergent children and why continued research is essential for optimizing its effectiveness.
