Leveling Up: Investigating the Impact of Video Gaming on Dual Tasking Performance

DescriptionThere are performance declines observed when an operator engages in dual-tasking when compared to the tasks individually such as increased response time and decreased accuracy due to increased cognitive load (Strobach, 2019). This can be somewhat reduced through ensuring that the tasks performed use different types of processing (i.e. visual vs auditory processing or verbal vs spatial processing) but can never be completely mitigated (Brünken et al., 2004). Dual tasking requires high executive control skills, can be improved upon with training, and previous research has demonstrated that video game play can be that improvement mechanism (Green et al., 2012). Since video games are frequently similar to real life and complex in nature players should be better at task-switching and dual tasking in non-video game tasks than other non-video game playing populations (Bediou et al., 2018). Video games have been successfully used for training in fields such as the military and surgeon training, fields that require high cognitive engagement and skill (Cauffman et al., 2022). This study seeks to solidify the findings of previous literature by utilizing novel data collection methods and collecting detailed demographic data in order to determine the effect of video game experience on dual tasking ability.
