Linking Neurodiversity and the Adaptation to Emerging Technology: The Interplay between ADHD, Executive Functions, and Chatbot Acceptance
DescriptionThis study integrates technology acceptance with adaptation theory to explore the role of cognitive differences, specifically neurodiversity and executive functioning, in the adaptation to chatbots. Using an eco-driving chatbot, the research examines how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and executive functions like cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control influence chatbot acceptance. Despite hypothesizing a positive association between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and intention to use the chatbot, and a negative association between ADHD and chatbot acceptance, findings revealed that ADHD did not correlate with cognitive flexibility deficits but was linked to inhibitory control. Cognitive flexibility was the only factor significantly related to perceived ease of use, though not in subsequent mediation analyses. The study highlights the importance of experience with chatbots in mitigating the impact of cognitive flexibility and suggests that further research is needed to fully understand the interplay between neurodiversity and technology acceptance. This work enriches cognitive science and human-computer interaction, offering insights for designing more inclusive technologies.
