Investigating the Effects of Information-Based Interventions on Situation Awareness, Performance, and Workload during a Simulated Firefighting Task

DescriptionThis study explores how providing firefighters with SA-oriented information (e.g., house layout, fire location, and predicted number of residents) affects their situation awareness (SA), performance, and workload during a simulated house fire incident. Results show that targeted SA information improves SA and performance. However, our scenario was not effective in providing the necessary sensory stimulation to assess participants' physiological responses.
These findings support developing tools, intelligent firefighting technologies, and training to improve firefighters' SA, performance, and overall safety during emergencies.
