FIPRED: A Study of Predictive Automated Displays for Wildfire Fighting Management

DescriptionIntroduction: Wildfires are one of the most devastating and unpredictable forms of natural disasters, taking many lives and destroying countless structures each year. Predictor displays have been shown to provide a notable benefit in other scenarios and are applied to firefighting in the present study. Methods: Participants from a large university were recruited to participate in two wildfire prediction studies. Results: In all scenarios, a large predictor benefit was observed, and, in four of six scenarios, significant signs of automation bias were found. Discussion: The FIPRED display had an overall positive impact on participants, improving their ability to predict the future position of the fire. However, automation bias was created, indicating that participants may have over-relied on the automated assistance.
