Exploratory Study on Emotional Facial Expressions of Individuals with Visual Disabilities in Digital Communication Platform
SessionPoster Session 1
DescriptionThis study examined how adults with visual disabilities express emotions through facial expressions during video calls. Twenty-eight participants with severe visual impairment or blindness posed eight basic emotions over Zoom. Facial muscle movements (Action Units) were analyzed using the Facial Action Coding System. Results showed distinct and overlapping AU patterns, influenced by emotion type, arousal, and individual style. The findings highlight diverse expression strategies and underscore the need for inclusive emotion-recognition tools in digital platforms.
