Is Implementation Just Continuous Design? Opportunities and Challenges in Bridging Implementation Science and Human Factors
DescriptionThe conceptualization of implementation as simply the continuous design of systems has been debated since its introduction. Framing implementation as a secondary consideration to ongoing design and analysis of work systems, this debate pulls at the fabric of multiple well-established and highly funded bodies of literature such as implementation science. Advocates of the continuous design position cite the work systems conceptualization such as the systems engineering initiative for patient safety (SEIPS) and the ongoing journey of systems as they grow and change. In contrast, advocates of implementation science consider implementation processes to be intermediate and infrequent changes made in work systems to deliver necessary changes, and processes worthy of their own focus. This discussion panel will continue conversations from 2025 healthcare symposium on the framing of implementation as systems journey. This panel will be structured in a highly interactive debate format with open and informed discussion of implications for human factors and ergonomics (HF/E) research and practice.
