Wanted – Missing Connections: Building a Network of Undergraduates, Graduate Students, and Full Members of HFES
DescriptionHFES student chapters foster professional development through leadership opportunities and networking. Currently, most student chapters have a significantly higher proportion of graduate students, and some have minimal undergraduate student involvement. While undergraduate involvement presents challenges like turnover and training needs, it establishes early pipelines and mentorship opportunities to foster leadership within the society. This panel bridges perspectives between students and national leadership, focusing on critical dialogues about chapter vision and community development. Panelists consist of current PhD students active in student affairs, academic/industry professionals who have served on HFES committees, and executive council members. By evaluating engagement across diverse institutional contexts, the panel will provide actionable insights for student chapter and national chapter development. The discussion addresses multiple stakeholder perspectives on undergraduate engagement and leadership mentoring pipelines. These findings aim to enhance support mechanisms and strengthen institutional collaboration, with emphasis on undergraduate development. Attendees can apply insights within their own chapters or institutions, hopefully sparking wider interest in community development within HFES.
