Dismantling Discrimination in Healthcare Research and Practice Though Human Factors Approaches
DescriptionThe discipline of human factors and ergonomics (HFE) has increasingly emphasized the importance of integrating human factors approaches into the healthcare domain to promote the safety of patients and health professionals. To effectively maximize safety, we must broaden our research scope to additionally investigate the social, emotional, and psychological harm caused by discrimination in health settings. Many groups remain subject to discrimination both in health research and healthcare practice. Patient discrimination can manifest in many forms, including delays in treatment, denial of care, social vulnerability, abuse, and care that does not align with the patient’s needs. Alternatively, discrimination against health professionals may be embodied by inaccessible work environments and medical tools that aren’t designed for female surgeons or disabled health professionals. The objective of this panel is to explore actionable opportunities for HFE practitioners to promote positive outcomes and improved design for patients and health professionals by dismantling discrimination in HFE-related health research and health practice. Panelists will present on a range of topics, including inclusive medical equipment design, concrete strategies to dismantle bias in HFE-related health research design, human factors approaches to characterize racial/ethnic disparities in maternal care, and system contributors to psychological harm of transgender and non-binary people.
