Bridging Healthcare Human Factors and Evidence-Based Healthcare Facility Design: A Framework for Future Collaboration
DescriptionThe physical environment of healthcare facilities plays a pivotal role in shaping the experiences and outcomes of both patients/family caregivers and healthcare professionals. A growing body of research shows that the physical environment of healthcare environments impacts safety, efficiency, and well-being. Human factors research focuses on understanding how people interact with their environments, emphasizing design solutions that account for human limitations, abilities, behaviors, and the nature of tasks they perform. HF research and practice in healthcare emphasizes the importance of designing for ‘work as done’ versus ‘work as imagined’. Evidence-based healthcare facility design (EBD) is the process of making decisions about facility design using credible research to improve outcomes. Researchers in this field study how the design of the physical environment of healthcare facilities impacts patient, staff, and organizational outcomes. Despite the promise of these two approaches and aligned goals, there remains a gap in effectively combining human factors and healthcare facility design research and practice. This session seeks to create a discussion forum for researchers and practitioners interested in integrating theories and methods from human factors and evidence-based healthcare facility design, providing a pathway for collaboration among researchers and practitioners in human factors, healthcare architecture, and clinical fields.
