Mind the Gaps: How AI Shortcomings and Human Concerns May Disrupt Team Cognition in HATs
DescriptionIncreased inclusion of AI in workplaces has forced human workers to adapt to and work with AI. With their advanced capabilities, AI in the workplace functions as teammates, not merely as aids. Forming effective team cognition is necessary for these human-AI teams to perform reliably. Unfavorable prior experiences, differing capabilities and improper expectations have led humans to find it challenging to work with AI teammates. We sought in-depth opinions from subject-matter experts to understand their concerns about AI teammates related to team cognition. Utilising semi-structured interviews, we learned that human teammates found it challenging to trust and rely on AI teammates and believed that over-reliance on AI teammates could negatively impact their skills and capabilities. We also uncovered that a lack of human-like communication capabilities and emotional processing concerned human teammates, leading to the breakdown of team cognition in human-AI teams. This research informs about behaviours AI teammates must avoid, thus allowing the creation of AI teammates that support effective team cognition in human-AI teams.
