What Makes Vigilance Challenging? Identifying Sources of Workload during Visual Detection.
DescriptionSubjective workload during vigilance has been reported to increase while completing difficult tasks. It is unclear, however, the extent to which this effect is consequent of increased vigilance demands (i.e., detecting rare events), increased general task demands (i.e., the need to perform challenging visual discriminations), and increased response demands (i.e., the need to execute manual responses). To disambiguate between these sources of workload, participants completed a length-discrimination task where the difficulty of the task (easy vs. difficult) and signal rate (.05; .5; .95) were manipulated between subjects. Workload was estimated through the NASA-TLX scale. Analysis suggested similar changes in performance over time for the vigilance task (.05 signal rate) and standard signal detection task (.5 signal rate), and higher costs in performance for the SART condition (.95 signal rate). The effect of task difficulty was more notable for vigilance tasks. For easier tasks, ratings increased with response demands, particularly for the frustration and performance dimensions, although physical load was invariant across conditions. While completing more difficult paradigms, mental load was elevated at increased vigilance demands, with similar trends for the performance and effort subscales. Results suggest a more emphatic role of vigilance demands on workload at increased difficulty levels.
