The Influence of Personality Traits on Users’ Preference of eVTOL Control Parameters
DescriptionGiven the anticipated diversity of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) users and emerging simplified control systems, this study investigates how personality traits influence user preferences regarding eVTOL control dynamics under a single-joystick control system. 46 participants completed a mixed reality (XR) flight simulator experiment, with personality traits assessed using the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) and control preferences across eight flight parameters measured through adaptive staircase procedures. Hierarchical clustering and ANOVA revealed two distinct user groups, with higher conscientiousness, emotional stability, and extraversion associated with a consistent preference for more responsive pitch and roll dynamics. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating personality-driven approaches into eVTOL pilot training, adaptive automation, and interface customization to enhance operational safety, acceptance, and efficiency. Future research should examine the stability of personality-driven preferences under complex and realistic flight scenarios to further refine personality-based human-machine system optimization strategies.
