Enhancing Visual Search in Large Naturalistic Environments with Augmented Reality Cueing
DescriptionVisual search tasks are ubiquitous. While many everyday searches require locating a target within a limited field-of-view (FOV), searches in safety-critical domains, such as those conducted by search and rescue personnel, often take place in large naturalistic environments where targets lie beyond the immediate FOV. These scenarios underscore the need for innovative solutions to improve real-world search performance in dynamic environments where critical information may be outside of peripheral vision. Augmented-reality head-mounted displays (AR-HMDs) are well suited for these tasks because they overlay virtual information onto the real world, facilitating mental integration between cued information and the real-world context. However, little work has explored the effectiveness of different AR-HMD cue properties, particularly in large naturalistic environments. The present study examines how AR cue characteristics, such as number of cues and cue reliability, influence search performance in large naturalistic environments where objects may fall outside the immediate FOV. Participants completed a visual search for targets, either with or without AR attention cues that were either perfectly reliable or erred on occasion. This study highlights how certain AR cue designs enhance wide FOV search performance, offering important insights for designing automated attention guidance systems for augmented reality.
