Estimating Acceptable Duty Cycles for Overhead Exertions
DescriptionOverhead work exposes workers to a heightened risk of shoulder injuries due to awkward postures and muscle fatigue. While time restrictions are commonly applied to overhead work, current assessment tools lack the specificity to determine acceptable exposure limits for particular force levels or postures. This study introduces a novel approach for estimating the Maximum Acceptable Duty Cycle (MADC) of overhead tasks by adapting an established ergonomic assessment model. The method calculates MADC as a function of hand position, force direction, and load, offering more task-specific guidance than traditional force-based limits. Simulation across different reach zones revealed that safe overhead work durations vary widely depending on posture. Notably, some common overhead positions allowed no acceptable duration even at low forces (5 N), suggesting current industry limits may be too generous.
