The Role of Procedure Complexity on Performance in High-risk Industries: A Scoping Review
DescriptionHigh-risk industries emphasize the importance of procedures. Complexity of written procedures has impacted human performance or behavior. This review aims to summarize and synthesize literature that studied the methods used for the measurements of procedural complexity and the impact of procedural complexity on human performance. A scoping review was conducted by searching Compendex and Web of Science. Of 4011 articles identified and screened, 43 were included. This review identified seven methods quantifying the procedural complexity with sub-components, and the number of actions in a step and difficulty of logic sequence are the two common and significant factors contributing to measurements. In addition, the effect of procedural complexity on human performance is summarized and synthesized. For time, error, and workload aspects as performance, human performance tends to be impaired with procedures of high complexity. However, there is a need for incorporation between methods to expand existing measurements to various high-risk industries, and a validation of the role of procedural complexity in naturalistic environments to generalize the findings to the actual workplace.
