What Every Human Factors Expert Needs to Know about Human Error and Reliability
DescriptionHuman error research and practice were largely borne out of accidents that galvanized the need for increased safety and risk awareness. These issues have continued across industries, but the importance of continuing to focus on human error should not be limited to discrete historic events. Human error is well established, but there are significant new applications of it, not just in safety-critical industries. There is a vibrant community of research and practice tackling the latest interfaces between humans and technology and how that can go wrong—and right. Many of the topics of human error have splintered into standalone domains. However, it is important that human error remains a central focus area of the human factors and ergonomics (HFE) community. The aim of this panel is to demonstrate the applicability of human error for researchers and practitioners of HFE. The panel features seasoned and emerging thought leaders in human error across defense, maritime, oil and gas, aviation, and nuclear. Additionally, while human error is often grounded in safety-critical, high-consequence industries, the panel includes a discussion of the importance of human error to user experience in non-safety consumer domains.
