A Level-of-Automation Testbed for Nuclear Power Plants
DescriptionDue to increased demand for electricity, the United States is poised to significantly increase its nuclear power capacity for the first time in decades. With the advent of new nuclear power plants (NPPs) comes the opportunity to deploy new technologies. New concepts of operations may feature human-system concepts like advanced information visualization, artificial intelligence (AI) for prognostics and operator support, remote operations, reduced staffing, and increased use of automation. This paper presents a new levels-of-automation testbed in the form of a nuclear power simulator that can vary those tasks performed automatically vs. manually by operators. This testbed fills an important research gap generally in systematic ways to manipulate levels of automation. It also specifically provides key safety validation toward the deployment of advanced reactors.
