Can you see me? Naturalistic Pedestrian and Bicycle Conspicuity in Multimodal Contexts
DescriptionRoadway design standards inherently assume that line of sight is adequate for VRU conspicuity. Our crash rates imply otherwise. Two hundred locations were selected evenly from Seattle and Tampa in multimodal environments. A 1-second mid-block epoch was viewed to determine the number of simultaneous tasks that the driver was engaged in and whether a vulnerable road user (VRU) was seen by the driver, present but unseen, or absent. Contextual features and the 85th percentile speed were tabulated for each location. VRU’s were only present during 37% of the epochs and were seen 53% of that time. Sidewalk type, building face width, LOS, speed, speed limit, doorway density, and Right of Way (ROW) width impacted VRU perception. VRU presence and perception impacted the 85th percentile speed and multitasking behavior, which was also impacted by age, city, sidewalk type and crash history. A canonical correlation identified two specific interactions between attention and VRU expectation: workload which is dominated by the intensity of the environment and human presence management, which is impacted by situational awareness. VRU presence was impacted by context (C3C, C5 and C6), LOS, doorway density, building face width, lighting, Walkscore, enclosure, block length, driveway spacing, and posted speed limit.
