The Influence of Performance Feedback on Trust and Self-Confidence in Dynamically Reliable Automation
DescriptionThis study examines how performance feedback influences trust and self-confidence during interactions with dynamically reliable automation. Trust and self-confidence are critical components of human-automation collaboration: trust governs reliance decisions, while self-confidence affects how individuals integrate automation into their decision-making processes. In this experiment, eighty participants engaged with an automated assistant whose reliability fluctuated across tasks. Participants received performance feedback throughout the interaction. Contrary to expectations, trust and self-confidence remained stable, showing little sensitivity to changes in reliability or feedback. However, when considered alongside previous research, the results suggest that performance feedback may moderate variability in trust, stabilizing perceptions of automation over time. While such stabilization could help maintain consistent human-automation teaming, it also raises concerns about the potential for complacency and overconfidence when users receive positive feedback regardless of system performance. Future research should investigate individual differences in trust calibration, as well as the roles of situational awareness and prior experience with automation. Understanding the complex interplay between feedback, trust, and self-confidence is essential for developing systems that promote calibrated trust, prevent misuse or disuse of automation, and optimize overall team performance in dynamic operational environments.
