Attitudes, Behaviors, and Physiological Effects of Stress Management Training on Collegiate Air Traffic Control Students
DescriptionStress, especially in the workplace, is external pressures that an individual feels are challenging one’s actions and abilities to respond competently and effectively. Work stress often infiltrates personal life, impacting relationships and well-being. Air traffic control (ATC) is one of the many safety-critical occupations that affect our daily lives. Teaching stress management training (SMT) to ATC personnel may be beneficial for optimal work performance and personal health.
A stress management training course was conducted with 87 participants (randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group) enrolled in air traffic management courses at an aeronautical university. The experimental group showed significant improvement during a graded simulator performance assessment when compared to the control group. Indications that the SMT training course was also beneficial for the participants' personal lives. It is recommended that further testing and implementation be conducted with air traffic control trainees as well as veteran controllers.
