Attention-Guiding Techniques and Their Use as Decision Support Tools: A Scoping Review
DescriptionIn complex task environments, limited human attentional resources can become a critical vulnerability. Our scoping review explored different attention-guiding (AG) methods and how they have been implemented as decision support tools (DSTs) across domains. Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically reviewed 38 papers on AG methods and 14 papers on AG-DSTs. Visual cues such as flicker, color highlights, and arrows dominated the literature, while tactile and multimodal cues showed promise for specific applications. AG-DSTs have been primarily implemented in driving, education/training, aviation, and military contexts, where they improved anticipatory actions, decision accuracy, flight performance, and intelligence analysis. However, significant knowledge gaps were also identified: most studies used simple laboratory scenarios with student participants rather than complex real-world environments; applications were limited to a narrow range of domains; and few approaches incorporated real-time data adaptation. Most critically, many AG methods failed to support information processing beyond mere attention capture, limiting their effectiveness for complex decision-making. Future research should expand AG-DST applications across domains while developing methods that not only guide attention but also support comprehensive information processing in dynamic contexts.
