Game Mechanics in Space: Leveraging Gamification to Support Crew Performance and Resilience
DescriptionLong-duration spaceflight introduces complex human factors challenges, including cognitive strain, isolation, and interpersonal coordination demands in extreme and confined environments. This presentation explores gamification and specific game mechanics as strategic, human-centered tools to enhance astronaut training, collaboration, psychological and physical well-being, and long-term mission resilience. Drawing from applications in other high-stakes domains like healthcare, defense, and emergency response, we discuss how mechanics such as adaptive challenges, feedback loops, immersive storytelling, and simulated mission tasks can mitigate cognitive load, foster team cohesion, and maintain motivation during LDSF. Game elements like progress tracking, skill trees, biofeedback-integrated fitness routines, and team simulation training are discussed in relation to five mission-critical domains: pre-flight training, collaboration, social interaction, psychological well-being, and physical well-being. A table is also provided, outlining design principles for applying gamified systems in spaceflight and analog environments, emphasizing usability, engagement, and alignment with human factors principles.
