The Characteristics of Medical Teams: A Quantitative and Empirical Study of Teamness in Healthcare
DescriptionA key feature of resilient healthcare systems is the use of multidisciplinary teams to improve patient and provider outcomes. Despite the many benefits of effective teams in healthcare, the characterization of an effective team remains opaque. In this study, empirical and quantitative methodologies (content analysis and factor analysis) were used to identify the underlying dimensions of teamness in the healthcare context. While previous research on healthcare teams has focused on specific issues such as expertise or collaboration, this work integrates academic and non-academic text sources to identify a comprehensive set of dimensions by which healthcare teams can be characterized. Our analysis uncovered eight distinct dimensions, including general team dimensions (synergy, homogeneity) and healthcare-specific dimensions (emotional support, technological fluency). These findings provide an evidence-based and quantitative framework for healthcare professionals and researchers to better characterize healthcare teams. Future research will explore the relationship between these dimensions and care outcomes.
