eVTOL Aircraft User Acceptance
DescriptionAs electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft advance toward integration into the national airspace, understanding pilot acceptance of the novel technology is essential for ensuring safe and effective operations. This study examines pilot perceptions across different pilot demographics, focusing on perceived skill transferability, confidence in performing advanced eVTOL maneuvers, automation preferences, training needs, and willingness to operate eVTOLs in the future. Findings revealed that while pilots perceived moderate skill transferability, confidence in executing advanced eVTOL maneuvers remained uniformly low across groups. Significant differences in automation preferences emerged, with Certified Flight Instructors favoring higher levels of automation compared to Private Pilots. Pilots expressed strong preferences for hands-on and simulator-based training, emphasizing the need for experiential learning approaches. Recommendations include developing tailored training programs and establishing certification standards specific to eVTOL operations. The study results offer valuable guidance for regulators, training organizations, and industry stakeholders aiming to foster operational readiness and safe eVTOL adoption.
