Assessing the Impact of Differential Sources of Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation on Risk-Taking Behavior
DescriptionMost occupations require workers to do tasks with extreme mental and physical demands. Over time, these sustained demands without adequate rest and recovery lead to occupational fatigue, negatively impacting their safety, productivity, and health. They are more likely to engage in risky behavior, which is further associated with increased errors and unwanted accidents. Despite these issues, there is a lack of literature comprehensively evaluating the differential effects of the different sources of fatigue, namely mental, physical, and sleep deprivation, on risk-taking behaviors. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap by investigating the relationship between different sources of fatigue and risk-taking behavior by using the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART). BART simulates real-world risky task demands where riskiness is awarded to a certain level; however, exceeding that level has negative consequences. A within-subjects experiment with 75 participants (30 females) was conducted. Each participant completed BART sessions on different days before and after a two-hour physically or mentally fatiguing task, or 30 hours of extended wakefulness. Results revealed that the effects of fatigue on risk-taking behaviors are both source- and sex-dependent. Results from this research can aid in developing targeted interventions and policies to mitigate unwanted fatigue-related risky behaviors at work.
