Beyond Overreliance: The Human-AI-System Concordance (HASC) Matrix and the Cognitive Dynamics of AI-Assisted Decision-Making
DescriptionWhat happens when humans trust AI systems too much—and don’t even realize it? In high-stakes environments such as healthcare, defense, finance, and enterprise operations, misplaced trust in AI can go unchecked, undermining judgment, accountability, and system resilience in human-AI collaboration. This session presents the Human-AI-System Concordance (HASC) Matrix, a novel framework for systematically predicting where trust misalignments and overreliance are most likely to emerge in human-AI decision-making. Paired with an empirical study evaluating Cognitive Forcing Functions (CFFs)—interventions that can disrupt automatic acceptance and promote critical thinking—the research highlights how trust dynamics, task complexity, and cognitive motivation shape the success or failure of AI-assisted decisions. As AI becomes increasingly embedded in critical workflows, this work offers a foundation for evaluating and designing decision systems that preserve human agency, anticipate cognitive vulnerabilities, and foster more adaptive, resilient human-AI partnerships.
