Family-Centered Rounding: A Systems Approach Towards Family and Staff Satisfaction with Design of Pediatric Intensive Care Units
DescriptionThis descriptive study focuses on mapping the flows of interdisciplinary family-centered rounds (FCRs) within three pediatric ICU settings. Using a systems approach, the work system components that comprise FCRs were mapped. Using behavioral mapping and observations, this study also demonstrates the FCR workflows that emerged from each facility, comparing and contrasting best practices, time taken during FCRs, and satisfaction levels of family and staff who participated in FCRs. Finally, based on the model for Systems Engineering Initiative on Patient Safety (SEIPS 2.0), this study proposes a systems model for the process of FCRs. A SEIPS model for FCRs allows healthcare organizations to review their processes at component levels and improve the workflows and patient outcomes.
