Establishing a Human Factors Network for High-Risk Industries in Canada

DescriptionWe detail the motivations, planning, development and initial formation of a specialized Human Factors network in Canada. The Human Factors in Control (HFC) Canada network was driven by an industry initiative to better establish Human Factors knowledge development, knowledge sharing and networking amongst regional, national and international stakeholders engaged in high-risk, safety critical industrial domains. While initially conceptualized by the offshore energy and maritime industries operating in harsh environments in the North Atlantic Ocean, the network aims to fill a current gap in the region in two key ways: (1) fostering Human Factors knowledge exchange and (2) building collaborations between multidisciplinary stakeholders within the energy and maritime sectors, and beyond. Specifically, the HFC Canada network will focus on providing education and training on Human Factors theory, facilitating the development of Human Factors competencies and practices applied to high-risk industries. The HFC Canada network also endeavors to build a community of practice by leveraging the current knowledge and expertise that exist in the region. This will create a more unified, consolidated and explicit Human Factors ecosystem. This paper will describe the network’s formation, operational structure and activities, including initial feedback and perspectives from differing stakeholders, lessons learned and future plans.
