Assessing Design Guidelines in Indoor Navigation Apps for People with Disabilities
DescriptionThis study examined the usability of an indoor navigation app designed for people with disabilities, to validate previously established design guidelines and identify new ones based on user feedback. There is a notable gap in the design of assistive technologies for indoor navigation, especially those informed by both quantitative and qualitative data. Twenty-five individuals interacted with a navigation app (called FIND), tested its features, and provided feedback on its usability. The study found supporting evidence for previously proposed usability guidelines and provided evidence that the app was usable across different user groups with varying disabilities. The FIND app shows potential in improving indoor navigation for individuals with disabilities, with its design largely adhering to user needs across various disabilities. The findings provide insights toward the development of more effective and user-centric design guidelines for indoor navigation aids.
