Clinician and Administrator Perspectives on Health Information Exchange: Results from a National User Satisfaction Survey
DescriptionWe will present results from a survey conducted in 2024 across the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The goals of free-text survey items were to assess: 1) employees’ satisfaction with health information exchange (HIE) viewer design; 2) end users’ experience, to inform future design enhancements; and 3) how satisfaction results compare to the 2020 survey results. Altogether, 598/9,900 invited employees (6% response) participated in the survey, including nurses (35% of respondents), administrators (22%), providers (21%), social workers (6%), pharmacy professionals (4%) and others (12%). The 2024 results provide evidence that HIE access is increasing employees’ perceived work efficiency and productivity. Comparing 2024 versus 2020 survey results indicates that recently added customization options improved employees’ work and patient care. Both surveys report a need to improve HIE viewer system speed, search capabilities, ease of use, and ease of learning, indicating these needs for usability enhancement continue to persist. This is the first large-scale, longitudinal survey of a nationwide HIE system that includes qualitative data on employees’ real-life experiences with the tool. Our results identify employees’ underlying HIE needs, which are likely to generalize to other HIE systems. Even modest improvements in HIE usability are likely to improve patient care.
