Results of the July 2025 NASA Multi-Vehicle (m:N) Working Group Meeting
DescriptionThis talk summarizes the results of the July 2025 Multi-Vehicle (m:N) Working Group Meeting. This meeting brought together 52 representatives from academia, industry, and government to reduce barriers in multi-vehicle UAS (uncrewed aircraft system) operations. Through presentations and discussions, the Working Group examined real-world, multi-vehicle concepts of operation in the U.S. and abroad; previewed upcoming regulations and standards from ASTM International, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other international civil aviation authorities; and explored how autonomy and automation are shifting where accountability lies. The main focus of the meeting, however, was generating new topics to guide the future of the Working Group. Breakout sessions resulted in the formation of three new subgroups: (1) “Scalable Remote Crew Design Considerations for Multi-Aircraft Operators & OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)” will examine the distribution of tasks, roles, responsibilities, and handoffs among remote crewmembers; (2) “m:N Validation & Verification” will develop an evaluation framework for safe m:N operations, concepts, and tools; and (3) “Design Considerations for m:N” will define baseline considerations for robust system management in fully integrated airspace. The new subgroups will complement two existing subgroups: (1) “sUAS” subgroup is developing a white paper on emerging technologies and operational approval of autonomous systems and another on public outreach and community acceptance; and (2) “Interventions & Exceptions” subgroup is continuing development of a white paper on a modeling and simulation approach to validating operations. This talk will provide additional information on the Working Group and its subgroups for those interested in becoming a member.
