Applications of Motion Capture in Amusement Ride and Devices Assessments: Exploring Its Role in Evaluating Rider Interaction, Comfort, and Safety
DescriptionAssessments of amusement rides and devices require consideration of human interaction, movement, and performance throughout the process. Traditional assessment methods for evaluating amusement rides (i.e., rollercoasters) involve a singular sensor measuring accelerations, aiming to evaluate the rider's instantaneous and sustained accelerations (g) as indicators for patron safety. In this case study, the authors demonstrate the potential of using IMU-based motion capture techniques to collect not only acceleration data but also joint, body segment positions, and global positions. These measurements, combined with other 3-D modeling techniques, provide comprehensive information that can be used to assess patron or operation interactions with amusement rides and devices at every stage.
