Sidekick RPM: An IoT-Enabled Remote Patient Monitoring Prototype for Enhanced Senior Care
DescriptionThe demand for technology solutions in senior care facilities is growing due to increased needs in the population to service with a lagging staffing apparatus: Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) solutions are needed to scale the capabilities of care staff. Senior care establishments, whether they include independent or assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing units, face specific challenges currently unaddressed by the technology market. To overcome this gap, we explored the viability of converting an Internet-of-Things (IoT) asset monitoring platform originally conceived for military facilities into a simple, effective RPM solution for senior care facilities. We report on our human-centered engagements and engineering activities to devise such a solution in partnership with a senior care facility in Texas. We share the lessons learned on the feasibility and potential of two capabilities for RPM (geolocation and remote vitals) for other practitioners and industry stakeholders to leverage in their endeavors.
