From Interviews to Insights: Understanding the State of Local HFES Chapters Using Qualitative Methods
SessionUX: Methods and Models
DescriptionWhat does it mean to foster local community in an increasingly globalized world? In a professional organization full of researchers, the question doesn't have to be rhetorical.
In the fall of 2024, one member of the HFES Local Chapters Committee conducted interviews with nine chapter leaders to better understand the state of local chapters. This presentation has three primary goals:
1.) Providing a case study for qualitative research methods.
Interested in learning more about making sense of interview data? We will be discussing the research methodology we used for this study, including our use of Dovetail to go from raw data to coded data to insights.
2.) Discussing the ups and downs of volunteer research.
This research was conducted in a volunteer capacity, which brought both new opportunities and new challenges. If you're newer to HF and/or UX and hoping to learn how to boost your portfolio, this is definitely one you won't want to miss!
3.) Sharing lessons learned regarding the state of HFES local chapters.
Methodology is interesting, but so are results! This presentation will share insights from the study about the current state of HFES local chapters.
