Competition to Collaboration: Defining UX Standards in New IT Drive Product Design

DescriptionThis practitioner study shares the journey of competitors collaborating to drive UX improvement in the often overlooked area of IT hardware design. Emergent IT technologies present challenges as they mandate new behaviors to keep up with changing monitoring visual user interactions. The Enterprise Datacenter Small Form Factor (EDSFF) open-source consortium faced such a challenge: how to define standards for indicators for a new device technology, CXL (Compute Express Link), to meet future customer needs with little available user data for guidance. This led to a unique collaboration between competitors. HF and UX research leads from Dell and HPE teamed up to pool resources and jointly design a research initiative aimed at determining the ideal set of state indicators for CXL devices. Their collective effort focused on ensuring the standard anticipated future user requirements. This talk highlights the powerful potential of such cross-industry partnerships. It explores the process of collaborative research, the steps taken to address a shared problem, and the valuable insights gained. Through this story, we demonstrate how competitors can come together to implement solutions that benefit the entire user community—offering lessons and strategies that other practitioners can apply to foster similar collaborative efforts in their own fields.
