Unboxed: Operation – Gamifying Human Factors Outreach
DescriptionUnboxed: Operation is an interactive outreach activity designed to introduce high school students to the field of human factors through hands-on, team-based challenges. This scenario-based game immerses students in the role of emergency medical professionals. Participants diagnose a patient using decision aids, optimize operating room layouts to minimize task time, and assemble a pacemaker using instructions that highlight the impact of usability on performance. Each challenge targets human factors concepts, while also building communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The kits are distributed in medical bags and include a facilitator guide, slides, and all activity materials.
This alternative format session offers a dynamic, hands-on experience with Unboxed: Operation. Small teams will engage in the challenges and participate in a structured debriefing. The session will conclude with a short presentation on the design and implementation of the kit and an ideation session to generate outreach resource recommendations for HFES.
By bringing together HFES members that are interested in educational outreach, this session aims to spark discussions on how existing and future materials might be leveraged to expand the visibility of human factors at the K-12 level.
