Decision Centered Design: An Interactive Mini Workshop
DescriptionDecision-Centered Design (DCD) is a cognitive engineering framework that focuses on identifying tough decisions and cognitive challenges as drivers for prioritizing design decisions. DCD is based on concepts and methods posited by the Recognition-Primed Decision model and macrocognition. The team’s practice of DCD is also influenced by work-centered evaluation. DCD includes five stages: preparation, knowledge elicitation, analysis, design, and evaluation. We frequently use this framework to design in the context of envisioned world problems as we develop solutions for situations in which roles, technologies, and tasks do not yet exist. The framework is particularly valuable for developing systems in which humans will use or otherwise collaborate with rapidly evolving technology, e.g., artificial intelligence. The authors will conduct an alternative format presentation in the form of a 90-minute interactive mini workshop. In this session, the authors will provide an overview of DCD and its components and engage attendees in a series of interactive exercises to experience the method. We will share our practical experiences implementing each stage and adapting the goals for individual projects. At the end of the session, attendees will be asked to reflect on their own work projects and consider how DCD may be useful in their efforts.
